Growler Features Housed in a high-impact molded case for the most rugged use in busy service shops. The instrument is provided with testing prods, an armature breakdown meter and test light for easily finding defective armature and windings.
Provided with easy to follow instructions, our growler will locate
opens, shorts, grounds, high resistance connections, improper number of
turns, etc. Will test various types of armatures including the alternate
wound armatures used in modern high-output generators and starters.

Ground Test
With armature cord plugged into AC outlet, place armature between growler jaws and set selector switch in ground position. Apply test prods between commutator bars and armature core. The ground test light should not flash. A flash indicates bad insulation between core and armature wiring. |

Short Test With armature in place on growler, move Selector switch to ON position. Rotate armature slowly in growler jaws and hold a hacksaw blade in parallel against top of armature. The steel blade will be attached to the core and will vibrate when two shorted armature coils is located. |

Bar-to-Bar Test With armature in place on growler, move Selector switch to ON position. Apply test prods to adjacent commutator bars one quarter away from top armature. (Three bars apart on starter armatures) Adjust meter control to partial scale reading. Rotate armature and compare for uniform output of all commutator bars at exactly the same position, one quarter way around from top of armature. To check for reverse coils test between bars one and three as described above. A zero reading indicates a winding with reversed connections at the commutator. |
